Green Hills of Africa

Hemingway: "We have had writers of rhetoric who had the good fortune to find a little, in a chronicle of another man and from voyaging, of how things, actual things, can be, whales for instance, and this knowledge is wrapped in the rhetoric like plums in a pudding. Occasionally it is there, alone, unwrapped in pudding, and it is good...but the people who praise it, praise it for the rhetoric which is not important. They put a mystery in which is not there."

Page a day

One drawing for every page of Moby Dick (I remember something similar from the 2004 Whitney Biennial, but for Gravity's Rainbow).

Whale Chart

Here it* is. Or something related, anyway. Same author, same date, but the map described by Melville has more information in it (12 columns for 12 months).

*From Chapter 44, "The Chart": "* Since the above was written, the statement is happily borne out by an official circular, issued by Lieutenant Maury, of the National Observatory, Washington, April 16th, 1851. By that circular, it appears that precisely such a chart is in course of completion; and portions of it are presented in the circular. "This chart divides the ocean into districts of five degrees of latitude by five degrees of longitude; perpendicularly through each of which districts are twelve columns for the twelve months; and horizontally through each of which districts are three lines; one to show the number of days that have been spent in each month in every district, and the two others to show the number of days in which whales, sperm or right, have been seen."
