type='text'>metempsychosis ramble...no links

So, I may have mentioned this in passing, but I am an intense and unashamed fan of the show LOST (CT-style, I should note that I'm clearly a little ashamed, since I'm getting all defensive about how unashamed I am, and should really say that I don't want to be ashamed, because, seriously, it's a great show.) As a rather hardcore fan, I have this little ritual for watching each new episode: I watch it on my laptop the day after it comes out, and then I read Entertainment Weekly's recap and comments on the episode (and then I start on the podcasts...sort of kidding...) which are written by this dude who as far as I can tell just watches Lost for a living (talk about dream jobs), and loves to chase down every possible reference and resonance in the show. In this weeks recap, I came across reference to a newly familiar word: METEMPSYCHOSIS. This is noteworthy (if it is noteworthy) not because of the coincidence of my coming across the word in two things I love, but because the professional Lost-watcher was discussing this word in the context of Ulysses, where I guess Leopold Bloom is obsessed with it. We haven't talked about IJ and Joyce, I don't think, and I have only read Portrait of the Artist, so I'm unqualified, but are there any resonances between the two?

IJ Wiki

this is good.

Words

Frankly, I think there's a lot missing. I remember talking about this during book club, but this line made me think of the ending of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. As noted in the wikipedia for AP:

"The incipit of the book has Bateman staring at a graffiti on a Chemical Bank building, reading Abandon all hope ye who enter here; this phrase appears over the gates of hell in the Divine Comedy. The book ends with a scene similar to its beginning, as Bateman sits in a bar, staring at a sign that reads "THIS IS NOT AN EXIT" ; a reference to Jean-Paul Sartre's play No Exit. The opening and closing phrases summarize Bateman's life as a living hell he cannot escape."

Is DFW referencing Sartre or Ellis? or Both? or Neither? It seems as likely any of the three.
<img width='1' height='1' He did say that the area east of Harvard Ave on Comm Ave used to be a pretty bad neighborhood (though I think that's more Brighton...). You can see the railroad tracks on google maps, if that helps. When Erdedy's buying pot on p.18, he buys it from a woman who "said she knew a guy just over the river in Allston who sold high-resin dope in moderate bulk," and that guy is most definitely the dude with the hairlip.

Film references

On p. 185, Mdme. The sigmoid, assuming he means the sigmoid colon (the only anatomical sigmoid I've learned so far) part makes sense, it's the last part of the colon before it becomes the rectum and then anus and it's located in the posterior region of the abdominal cavity, but the inguinal canal is in the anterior region of the abdomen, it's the canal that the arteries, veins and vas deferens (as well as the cremaster muscle) travel through to reach the scrotum/testes. There's really now way that a straight line could be drawn between the terminus of the esophagus, the inguinal canal and the sigmoid colon.

Cool, but unhelpful anatomical textbook images Below.

Oh well, maybe I'll actually learn all the drugs he talks about at some point too.

Tennis - Federer

Since we've talked about it a little bit. In the course of Time, these Extensive maps were found somehow wanting, and so the College of Cartographers evolved a Map of the Empire that was of the same Scale as the Empire and that coincided with it point for point. Less attentive to the Study of Cartography, succeeding Generations came to judge a map of such Magnitude cumbersome, and, not without Irreverence, they abandoned it to the Rigours of sun and Rain. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10.
